Welcome to Sounds Like Impact, and happy summer / winter!
While technically the season has not officially changed, the vibes are here. I’m traveling, but Sounds Like Impact is resuming regular publication this month as promised! According to survey results from this spring, the preference is for publication twice a month, so that’s likely the schedule from now on. However, please continue to vote (I have other questions too!), and I will reassess if needed.
This week, we have a guest curation from Kevin McGrath over at PRIDE Daily to kick off June Pride celebrations! (Here is a global calendar of celebrations.)
ICYMI: Last edition was not a curation, but it was the announcement of Empact Exchange! Click below to learn more about the initiative to connect social impact audio makers to projects and purpose.

PRIDE Daily, Season 3, episode 96: A bigoted teenage election candidate dropped by his party.
This is an episode of my podcast, PRIDE Daily. It’s the world’s only daily LGBTQ+ news podcast, covering the top three global stories in just two minutes. PRIDE Daily isn’t just for queer people - if you’re not on the LGBTQ+ bus yourself, you definitely know someone who is. (Oh, and we often refer to bigots as “bedwetting boneheads”, so what's not to love..?)
This episode features:
A teenage election candidate dropped by his party for anti-LGBTQ+ posts, including “homosexuality is degenerate” and calling lesbianism “disgusting”.
The EU lawmakers saying Hungary is going in the wrong direction following its ban on Pride events.
Why a Gay MP in Australia has created an OnlyFans page!
Queer News with Anna DeShawn, Episode 100: Trans service members get a win, Laverne Cox’s Clean Slate gets cancelled and the LA Sparks will retire Candace Parker’s jersey.
Offering an American perspective on the latest LGBTQ+ happenings, e3 Radio’s Anna DeShawn hosts Queer News. The award winning weekly podcast is a space “where race and sexuality meet politics, culture and entertainment”.
The hundredth episode features a legal setback in the US government’s attempts to ban transgender people from serving in the country’s military. Anna also covers the series ‘Jay & Pamela’, with its themes of queerness, disability and visibility. The podcast also marks Lesbian Visibility Week with Pat Parker reading her poem ‘My Lover is a Woman’. Where some LGBTQ+ podcasts can feel dominated by the gay white male experience, Queer News most definitely is not.
What the Trans, Episode 129: A Poorly Judged Decision.
Ashleigh and Alyx discuss UK transgender news, events, pop culture and, as they put it, “how being trans is better than being anything else”.
Here, the pair digest the UK Supreme Court ruling that the legal definition of a woman excludes trans women. They also cover legal action brought by transgender pool player Harriet Haynes against the English Blackball Pool Federation and its attempts to ban her from women’s competitions. This edition also features a rather unorthodox opening which some may care to label “uncouth”..!
OUTCAST UK, Episode 109: Gay and Illegal - OUTCAST UK in the Caribbean.
Outcast UK, presented by Virgin Radio UK’s Graeme Smith, is so good at offering “progressive queer news and chat”, it's the recipient of a prestigious British Podcast Award. Among the diverse range of topics covered since its launch in 2021 - an interview with Esther Ghey, the mother of murdered transgender teenager Brianna; plus features on the queer Edinburgh Fringe, UK Black Pride and 15 years of Grindr.
This episode focuses on the recriminalisation of homosexuality in Trinidad and Tobago. Graeme speaks to Jason Jones, an activist taking a case to the UK’s Privy Council, Trinidad’s final court of appeal. Like Queer News, Outcast UK is another, much needed, LGBTQ+ podcast that makes a point of stepping beyond the world of the gay white male. (Nothing wrong with being a gay white male, by the way - I am one! I would argue we’re very well served by the media though.)
Gender Reveal, Episode 251: Caro De Robertis.
Gender Reveal is all about the diversity of the transgender experience. Presenter Tuck Woodstock explores current events with trans guests, answers advice questions and attempts to expand our understanding of “what the heck gender is”.
In this episode, This Week in Gender looks at the safety concerns of transgender people in crossing the US border. Plus, author Caro De Robertis discusses their oral history work with trans, genderqueer and two-spirit elders of colour, and explains why black transgender women were encouraged to detransition during the AIDS crisis. Also, it would be remiss not to show some love for the name of the podcast. Playing a strong title game here…
