Latinx Heritage Month + In my moderator era
Sounds Like Impact: A newsletter for audio and action
Welcome to Sounds Like Impact!
This edition doesn’t have a guest curator or interview, but I would like to share with you some recommendations and announcements. Let’s get started!
ICYMI: Last edition was guest curated by Sabrina Merage Naim, host of A Fine Mess, and I interviewed Emily Reeves, creator of the podcast Violence Week.
Announcement: This Sunday, September 22nd, I will be in conversation with author DéLana R.A. Dameron. Her debut novel, which was a Reese’s (Witherspoon) Book Club pick!, will be released on paperback on the day that happens to be my birthday. Come join us as we discuss not only the book (not too many spoilers, we promise!), but also DèLana’s background as a poet, Southern roots, and coming of age in the 90s. Follow @unofficialsocialchair on Instagram to join the Instagram Live at 6pm EST / 3pm PST.
Get Inspired: Grist, the environmental news outlet, released their Grist 50 list. This list highlights 50 individuals doing impactful work that helps our environment, and ultimately us. The climate crisis can feel overwhelming, so it is always helpful to have reminders that there are people out there doing the work, and perhaps they can inspire us to make change too.
Speaking of inspiration, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (former co-host of How to Save a Planet) just released her new book, What If We Get It Right? and guess what? You can get more insights on climate solutions and heaping doses of hope by subscribing to her new Substack
.
Job: The Podglomerate is hiring for a Manager, Marketing and Audience Development

🎧 Latinx Heritage Month Audio Recommendations
September 15 - October 15 marks Latinx Heritage Month. These dates coincide with independence from Spanish colonial rule for many countries throughout Latin America. Lately, I have been listening to podcasts by two incredible women whose identities as Salvadoran and Mexican Americans, respectively, are very important to them.
Sacred Scandal: Nation of Saints by Jasmine Romero 🇸🇻 tells not only the story of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero (no relation) and the chaos that followed, but also an unsolved murder in Jasmine’s own family. This show provides a lot of historical context that I think would be helpful set up for HUMO: Murder and Silence in El Salvador, from host Daniel Alvarenga 🇸🇻 who I interviewed a few months ago.
My Divo is the latest from host Maria Elena Garcia 🇲🇽 who captured many hearts with her storytelling about Selena in her award-winning podcast Anything for Selena. My Divo is about Mexican singer Juan Gabriel—another endearing musician with a global impact—and also host Garcia’s own queer identity. While I was not familiar with Juan Gabriel’s music before, the podcast is ultimately about identity, and I think we can all find ways to relate.
For more shows hosted or produced by Latinx podcasters, check out our previous interviews*:
Anita Flores 🇵🇪 (P.S. Anita has a new show called Doctor Horror).
*This list is based on public self-identification as having Latinx heritage, though there may be others I’ve interviewed that share this identity. If this is you, let me know!
Bonus: One of my favorite podcasters, Sam Fragoso 🇲🇽 of Talk Easy fame, celebrated his 30th birthday recently! To acknowledge this special birthday, he had former interviewee, actor Abbi Jacobson, interview him. Listen to this episode, and pretty much any Talk Easy episode.
P.S. Random Episodes
