Finding Joy in Activism
More recently, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) efforts have been under attack and the anti-ESG (environment, social and governance) rhetoric continues to threaten programs and initiatives that are meant to solve global systemic problems. Learning about these developments can be disheartening. But the truth is, those who are fighting the good fight are still here. And these humans continue to find joy in activism and advocacy.
So below are episodes that I hope put you in a better mood and mindset about making a positive change in the world. Happy listening!

Say More with Tulaine Montgomery, Advancing Social Impact Chuckle by Chuckle with Negin Farsad
In Tulaine’s words: “Humans who are depleted, enraged, and exhausted cannot build a better world.” This episode is a conversation about the importance of comedy in creating a foundation for social change and building bridges across identities. (Bonus: Social justice activist and author Rachel Cargle talks to Tulaine about making space for joy in an upcoming episode. Season 2 launches in late March!)
We Can Do Hard Things, Why Are We Never Satisfied? with adrienne maree brown
Pleasure activist, writer, and radical imaginist adrienne maree brown talks about finding beauty and connection in the everyday. I love how she talks about not wanting to lecture people about how to live. But instead, letting her life be a communication about it.
The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos, Being Green Doesn’t Mean Sacrificing Fun.. or Cutting Out Meat
Fear is not a sustainable tactic for driving action. This episode talks about the small ways that make activities like traveling, shopping and eating more enjoyable.
Life Kit, How to Find Joy in Activism
This episode features Karen Walrond, leadership coach, activist and author of the book "The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How To Work For Change Without Losing Your Joy." I love how they answer this question: “When you're fighting the ills of the world, when there are so many ills to fight, is there really space for joy in this work?”
Inclusion Begins with Me: Conversations That Matter with Dr. Cindy Pace, Inclusion Resolutions 2024
Change-making isn’t always about the big gestures and movements. It can start in the office, at school, or wherever you spend most of your time. In this episode, listeners and previous guests shared how they’re going to create more inclusive workplaces this year. Working on your inclusion goals can be a joy-inducing experience. And it can inspire people around you to do the same.
P.S. from Ayo: If you are seeking additional context around how DEI / ESG efforts are being impacted—due in large part to the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action—here are some recent pieces: “Wall Street’s DEI Retreat Has Officially Begun” and “Racial Justice Programs Under Fire: Foundations Are Running Scared When They Should Double Down”.
Also, here are some resources that you may find helpful to help navigate these changes and double down on a commitment to making workplaces more inclusive: Anti-racism at Work and Breaking It Down: The Current State of DEIB.
On the heels of Black History Month and at the beginning of Women’s History Month, I hope we realize that our work to build a society inclusive of those who have been marginalized, is ongoing! But as Camille represented with her curation, it’s important to keep finding joy in the work to be done. 💚
