Minding Our Mental Health

If you or someone you know is in need of help, please contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing or texting 988 if in the U.S. or checking out Befrienders Worldwide for resources near you.

  • Listen:

    • The podcast Baggage Drop is not just about mental health, it’s about creating healthy habits through adjusting your mindset. Yes, it is branded content, but it does provide tips some may find helpful. It’s organized into 12 steps, and the episodes average about 10 minutes.

    • Work often plays a huge part in our lives, so The Anxious Achiever is a podcast that aims to reframe the conversation about anxiety and mental health in the workplace.

  • Learn: Did you know it is possible to get certified in Mental Health First Aid? You can look into this, or mental health education in general.

Spiritual Trauma

CTAs curated by Simon Fung from Dear Alana podcast.

  • Seek: Seek support from those who’ve been through similar experiences. The Reclamation Collective partners with trauma-informed clinicians, community leaders, and activists to provide resources, support groups, and workshops on the subject of spiritual trauma and recovery.

  • Share: Share stories like Dear Alana, to help bring awareness and empathy to sensitive subjects such as spiritual abuse and moral injury.

  • Support: Give to the Alana Faith Chen Foundation — a mental health nonprofit created in Alana’s name.

We [should] care, A LOT: Caregiving

  • Sustain: Check out these NPR Life Kit stories that have tips to make your caregiving experience more sustainable: “How Caregivers can prevent burnout” and “How to Be a Better Caregiver When A Loved One Gets Sick.”

    • Also, CareWalks from iHeartPodcasts is a show that encourages you to take walks while listening to the episodes (they offer abridged versions too!)

  • Advocate: Help get Paid Leave for ALL passed – “The The United States is 1 of only 6 remaining countries in the world with no guaranteed form of paid leave.”

    • Maybe you’ve seen a couple of celebs, such as Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, make a funny video called “Get Your Sh*t Together, Baby”? It was for the #PaidLeaveforALL campaign. Let’s legislate change!

  • Support: The National Domestic Workers Alliance, an organization advocating for the rights and economic security of care workers. You can hear / read more from executive director Ai-Jen Poo on “How to care for the people who take care of us.”

  • Read: Hilarity for Charity, an Alzheimer’s and caregiving advocacy organization founded by Seth and Laura Rogen, has a book club #HFCReads you can join. Follow their Instagram to stay up to date.

  • Join: Find your community by joining a support group. There are so many different types, including virtual ones if finding local or attending in-person groups is inaccessible.

    • Our interview guest Anita Flores talks about support groups on her podcast CareTalkers in this episode.

Gun violence is a public health issue.

  • Follow: Organizations such as Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action often have rallies and other events you can get involved with.

  • Train: Get certified in CPR & First Aid. Why? Training increases your confidence in situations where you are under pressure and these are practical life skills regardless of what type of emergency you may encounter.

    • You can also consider becoming certified in Mental Health First Aid.

  • Learn: The Center for Gun Violence Solutions from the John Hopkins School of Public Health is a great resource for education and advocacy information.

  • Volunteer: If you are a student, you can start a campus hub of March for Our Lives and anyone can start a community chapter or join the national team.

  • Share: Your stories matter. If you or a loved one has experienced gun violence, Moments That Survive is collecting submissions here.
