Hi there!
For those new to Sounds Like Impact, welcome! We will return next Wednesday to our twice a month publication schedule. But this week I want to share an opportunity to discuss an impactful podcast with our friends over at
.I’ve been subscribed to Article Club for about a year now and I love the premise: choosing an article about a societal issue to discuss as a group. It’s like a book club for articles!
Well recently the newsletter celebrated 9 years and in that edition creator
announced that they will be discussing the podcast Southlake. In a time when educators are struggling with mandates over how or whether we teach the difficult histories of the U.S., and in a time where books from diverse communities are being banned, there’s no better to time to discuss what can happen in the present when we don’t reckon with the racism of our past.Anyways, Mark didn’t ask me to share this, but how could I not promote an opportunity to discuss an important podcast. Please see below on what to expect and how to get involved, and let me know if you join!
Unfortunately, I will be on vacation and will miss participating this round, but perhaps this is something we can do together in the future. Let me know if interested!
Please note: You will need to go to the Article Club post linked below, and drop a comment on the post letting Mark know you are interested in participating. Below is the link and some of the text from the post about the initiative.
🎁 [This] month, I warmly invite you to a series of gatherings to discuss Southlake, the six-part podcast about how a mostly-white community in a Texas suburb failed to respond to the harm that white students caused when they chanted the N-word in a video after a homecoming dance in 2018. It’s very well done.
If you’re an educator, a parent, or if you care about issues of race and gender identity in schools, I encourage you to participate.
We’ll meet on Zoom three Sundays in July, discussing two episodes each, like this:
Sunday, July 14, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT: Episodes 1-2
Sunday, July 21, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT: Episodes 3-4
Sunday, July 28, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT: Episodes 5-6
In addition to talking about the podcast, we’ll also build relationships and support one another to make a difference on an issue in our own school communities. After all, what happened in Southlake is happening all over our country, in various ways.
I’m very excited to bring this to you alongside fellow educators and long-time Article Clubbers Telannia Norfar and Abby Benedetto. They’re wonderful.
Thank you very much for sharing Article Club and our discussion of Southlake with your readers! Everyone is welcome to join.
